Cask Sales

straightfromthecask.co.uk offers you the chance to own your own cask, either a "Quarter Cask"(approx.150 bottles) or an "Octave Cask" (approx. 70 bottles).

You have the opportunity to own your own unique malt or grain whisky which becomes more affordable and exclusive in the smaller casks available. It is ideal for both corporate and private label bottlings.

When you purchase any of our Quarter or Octave Casks you are paying for the spirit in the cask. The cask will mature in it's new cask for around 3/4 months and then be bottled for you. The actual empty cask is always retained as it will be re-used for further maturation purposes.  You are purchasing distilled and matured in Scotland, single malt or single grain whisky stored under British Customs and Excise Bonded control.  Your whisky will not attract excise duty until it is removed from bond.

If you are buying a cask in the UK the price you will be quoted will include all costs excluding delivery and and costs associated with personalised labels.

All casks are of the highest quality. We do not chill-filter or add colouring and our whisky is entirely natural from the cask.

The availability of our casks is ever changing and we offer a bespoke service regarding the purchase of casks and we will always want to discuss your preferences and requirements with you as a first step.

Please complete the enquiry form at our Contact Us page, stating specifically your desire to explore the purchase of either a quarter or octave cask of whisky.  On receipt of your enquiry we will be in touch to discuss your requirements and advise you of our present offerings.

ABOUT CASKS

www.straightfromthecask.co.uk will supply on your behalf a cask which is used for secondary maturation of the whisky. The casks available are:

Quarter Casks -  approx. volume 125 litres  - 27 gallons - approx. 175 bottles

Octave Casks - approx. volume 50 litres - 11 gallons - approx. 70 bottles

All casks used are constructed from well seasoned oak.  Smaller casks are favoured as the interaction between spirit and wood is far more prolific and results in a more balanced whisky.  The casks are ex bourbon and ex sherry and occasionally we use Scottish Oak.

Smaller casks means that buying is easier on the pocket too, producing around 70 - 175 bottles depending on cask type.

CASK PROVENANCE

The buyer must be aware of the provenance of their supplier, the casks and whisky.

Our casks/whiskies are sourced from a leading whisky supplier in Scotland of the highest reputation and are selected by experienced individuals who have learned their craft in the industry and have extensive knowledge of cask management and of taking it from cask to final bottling.

www.straightfromthecask.co.uk  will only sell the highest quality product from the best casks that can be laid down for longer maturation or purchased for immediate bottling.

ACQUIRING A CASK

How does this work?

To acquire ownership of a Scotch Whisky cask is very easy.

Firstly, you have to select the type of whisky from the current range of casks available. You will choose either a "Quarter" Cask or "Octave" cask and the whisky will be matured in your cask for a period of around four months.  Your whisky, having been finished in your cask, will then be ready for bottling.

BOTTLING A CASK

www.straightfromthecask.co.uk  offers the following services:

Bottling:  We can bottle your cask at either 46% abv or cask strength. Neither of the above processes need chill filtration and are therefore preferred by www.straightfromthecask.co.uk. Bottling at any strength under 46% abv requires a further process called chill filtration and we believe this removes much of the taste of the spirit hence the reason we don't do it.

Bottle Type:  The bottle sizes we use are 700ml or 750ml standard tall round bottles. Most Single Malts are bottled in this type or very similar. 750ml is used predominately in the United States and South Africa.  700ml for the rest of the world.

Seal:  A cork mouth or screw cap (ROPP) seal will be provided.  If cork mouth the presentation will also have a gold non-pilfer seal.  This ensures that you receive your product un-tampered and is added security during shipment.

Label:  You have the choice of our standard label or of a personalised label. We can discuss your requirements nearer the time of bottling although I would point out there is a charge for personalised labels.

Outer case:  The bottles are packed in strong cardboard outer cases each containing six bottles.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We have provided some frequently asked questions regarding cask purchasing and bottling as follows:

1.  What do I get for my money if I buy  a quarter or octave cask?  When you purchase any of our Quarter or Octave Casks you are paying for the spirit in the cask. The cask will mature in it's new cask for around 3/4 months and then be bottled for you. The actual empty cask is always retained as it will be re-used for further maturation purposes.  You are purchasing distilled and matured in Scotland, single malt or single grain whisky stored under British Customs and Excise Bonded control.  Your whisky will not attract excise duty until it is removed from bond.

2.  What is excise duty?  This is the amount levied by the UK Government and in fact all governments of the world as a tax on alcohol.

3.  When, if at all, would I have to pay this duty?  The tax is paid on removal from bond after bottling.  If you decide to ship the bottles overseas, under a bonded shipment, the UK duty does not need to be paid, however, you have to pay your country's duties and taxes on arrival.  Please note that the USA has specific circumstances that can lead to additional charges being made due to the three tier system of import.  We can supply further details of this on request.

4.  The duty and tax issues seems to be very complicated, how do I go about this part?  It is not so much complicated, more time consuming, and is better left to us. We can assist in specific circumstances should you require. There will be costs associated with importation and theses are passed on to you, they vary depending your country of residence. Prices for import to USA on request.  Note that these charges are exclusive of import taxes.

5.  Any other specific issues?  We don't supply to any country or states that ban alcohol.

6.  What about the label, can I get my own label designed and applied?  Normally all bottles are prepared with www.straightfromthecask.co.uk standard label clearly stating the whisky type, age, date of bottling, bottle volume and strength.  However we can have your own message/personalisation added if you wish.

7.  Delivery and Shipping:  www.straightfromthecask.co.uk can deliver or ship your finished cases to anywhere in the world where alcohol is allowed. There will be a charge for this at cost +5% handling.  Prices on application.  (Please note we do NOT ship any casks out of Scotland).

8.  Duties and Local Taxes:  All taxes of any kind are to be borne by you the owner of the bottled whisky.  www.straightfromthecask.co.uk will only deliver via its local distributors in whichever country the goods are destined.  Prior to uplift you will have to pay import taxes and any other local taxes to our nominated local distributor.  A further payment of 20% VAT is added to charge.

10.  Bond Transfer:  Your finished cases can be delivered bond to bond duty free.  However, this can only be done on clearance by UK HM Customs and to a recognised bond, you will require a WOWGR form we can deliver.  There is a charge for bond to bond delivery to cover Customs paperwork.  For Bond transfer to other countries out with the UK the same regulations apply.

11.  The Cooperage:  All of the casks used  have been manufactured from the finest oak grown either in the United States, Spain and even Scotland.
